LA GRANGE AUX AVOINES

the area

This is a wonderful part of France. It has been our home for over twenty years yet we still feel like we are tourists always discovering something new. Medieval castles, beautiful countryside, lakes, canals and historic towns to explore. Then there is the food and wine…

So you arrive, dump your bags and give a satisfied sigh!

Now what can you do?

Burgundy offers sites, events and activities to suit all

  • Golf and tennis a ten minute walk away at Chateau de Chailly – there is also a Hamam Spa
  • Riding in the ancient woods of the Morvan National Park
  • Hot air ballooning over the vineyards
  • The Saturday Market in Saulieu

Drive up to Chateaunuef en Auxois to visit one of France’s most favourite hilltop medieval castles with amazing views over the region. Every two years they host a Medieval Fayre where the whole town enters into the spirit by dressing up.

Dining out The world is your oyster ! Burgundy is known for its wine but also great food to go with it!

The closest place to eat out is at our very own Château de Chailly a five minute walk from La Grange aux Avoines offering two restaurants in this beautiful Burgundy château.

Next is our closest town, Pouilly-en-Auxois (an 8km cycle along the canal) where there are 3 restaurants:  The Sporting run by our good friend Pierre who offers super lunches of local product together with all the classics, croque Monsieur/Madame etc.  Eric at The Commerce offers wood fire cooked Pizzas and all others classics all day and in the evening.  Hotel de la Poste overlooking the town square is a  classy dining establishment, they offer fantastic fruits du mer.

At Mount Saint-Jean (9km) there is the wonderful Le Médiéval in the heart of this beautiful hill top village and castle.  The views are lovely over towards Saulieu and the Morvan national park. Every year in August they host a huge “brocante” car boot sale, it draws in thousands of people.

At Thoisy la Berchère a short 15 min drive away is local bistro Le Thysillien for a delicious ‘menu du jour’.

At Saulieu 20 mins drive further  into the Morvan, among several restaurants is the famous Michelin starred le Côte D’Or

The towns of Dijon and Beaune (both less than an hours drive away) are full of amazing places to eat and drink whilst taking in the architectural delights of the famous Hospice de Beaune and the Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne in Dijon.
